In the film “Maverick” we meet a wisecracking gambler trying to prove that he is the best poker player by winning a “five-card draw” poker tournament.
We pick up the the scene where a “fixed” hand is dealt to the three remaining final players. Commodore Duvall (James Coburn) has four 8s and Angel (Alfred Molina) is dealt the 3-4-5-6-7 of hearts for a low straight flush, while Bret Maverick ( Mel Gibson) has the 10, jack, queen and king of spades. The Commodore and Angel each bet “all in”. Maverick spots the dealer bottom-dealing to the others, refusing to let him deal his last card; he eventually accepts one card dealt by Angel and calls without checking the card. In an incredibly gripping and dramatic scene, we see that he has drawn the ace of spades, giving Maverick an unbeatable royal straight flush and the championship.
Of course, Maverick was amazingly skilled and amazingly lucky. If you want to make it to the final poker table like Maverick you may want to do some serious practicing first, so try picking up one of those handheld electronic draw poker games!
